August 26, 2018 — Campus Update

Dear Faculty & Staff,

The Fall semester is underway and our students are back on campus. I know that you’ll join me in warmly welcoming them. Please take a few extra moments during the first weeks of the semester to assist our new students as they find their way around campus. Students should feel as though they are our first priority. After all, they are.

A Summer of Change
We’ve had an exciting and busy summer. The cleaning of buildings and repair of sidewalks are among the most visible examples of activity.  This work is continuing and should be completed by mid-semester. More extensive interior repair work is also underway.

President’s Residence
Many have asked what is being done with the President’s residence. I’ve heard a number of things, including a rumor that we are preparing to demolish the home to build an academic building. The residence is a beautiful campus landmark that should be preserved and treasured. My family intends to live there and Gail and I want to make regular use of the residence for university events, including activities for students, faculty, staff and the community. When Dr. and Mrs. Authement moved to their new home, the Maintenance Department took advantage of this time to address some long-term plumbing and electrical issues. After a little painting and freshening up, the residence should be ready for use later this fall. We’re hopeful that it will be in time for homecoming.

Future Messages
I’d like to call your attention to the recommendations of the Transition Advisory Teams that are found on the university web site. In future messages we’ll discuss specific ways to respond to these thoughtful recommendations. Click below to see a recent news release outlining those recommendations.

I hope you’re looking forward to the new semester, meeting new colleagues, and exciting Ragin’ Cajun athletics as much as I.  Let’s make it a great fall.
